TKI Bouw en Techniek

Catalyst for scalable innovations with impact

TKI Bouw en Techniek is the Topconsortium for Knowledge and Innovation in the construction and infrastructure sector of The Netherlands. We act as a catalyst for scalable innovations, accelerating adoption by connecting businesses, research institutions, and government, and by removing barriers to progress. This collaborative approach drives the breakthroughs needed to boost productivity in the sector and to achieve our missions.

Knowledge and innovation for a CO2-neutral and future-proof built environment in 2050.

TKI Bouw en Techniek  is the catalyst for scalable innovations for a CO2-neutral and future-proof built environment in 2050. Knowledge and innovations are crucial for increasing the productivity and impact of our sector.

Productivity growth in the design, construction, and engineering sectors is minimal, and in some cases even negative. In order to achieve a future-proof built environment in a timely manner, it is necessary to make a leap in productivity.

That is why we initiate, guide, and support innovation programs that develop and scale up knowledge and innovation to make this leap. We focus on extending the lifespan of existing buildings and on new construction, which we do in a climate-adaptive manner and with minimal negative impact, i.e., circularly.

Making 8 million homes and 1 million buildings more sustainable by 2050.

85,000 bridges, viaducts, tunnels replaced en renovated.

100,000 homes built per year until 2030.

Significantly reduce greenhouse gas and nitrogen emissions by 2030.

A climate-resilient built environment by 2050.

50% reduction in raw materials by 2030, and fully circular by 2050.

Three multi-year missions

Through three Multi-Year Mission-Driven Innovation Programs (MMIPs), we are working on a programmatic approach for the development and upscaling of knowledge and innovation for a CO2-free and future-proof built environment in 2050.

Frequently asked questions

A Top Consortium for Knowledge and Innovation (TKI), created as part of the Top Sector Policy of the Dutch government, acts as a catalyst. It brings together market parties, knowledge institutions, and government and works through a programmatic approach to develop and scale up knowledge and innovation in order to tackle urgent sector challenges.

Through our three missions (MMIPs), we work on innovation programs for the development and upscaling of knowledge and innovation.

Innovation programs are a structured way of working that brings together parties from the market, knowledge sector, and government to achieve common goals. It stimulates cooperation and ensures that innovations are implemented effectively and on a large scale.

TKI Bouw en Techniek is funded by the Dutch government’s mission-driven innovation policy. We also receive additional funding from the innovation programs that we manage, supervise, or support.

Our foundation

We were established on July 1, 2022, to contribute to the Mission-Driven Top Sectors and Innovation Policy from within the design, construction, and technology sectors. The plan to develop a Top Consortium for Knowledge and Innovation (TKI) for our sector originated during the creation of De Bouwagenda under the chairmanship of Bernard Wientjes. From 2019 onwards, this plan was further developed by the BTIC (Construction and Technology Innovation Center), a public-private partnership between three ministries, three industry associations, and three knowledge institutions. The BTIC was dissolved in 2022 with the establishment of TKI Bouw en Techniek.
